As winter blankets much of the Northern Hemisphere in snow and frost, Cyprus emerges as the sun-kissed jewel of the Mediterranean, inviting visitors to embrace a Christmas experience that seamlessly combines the warmth of its mild winter climate with the enchantment of rich cultural traditions.

In the picturesque city of Paphos, the festive spirit extends generously over two weeks, commencing on December 24th and concluding with the celebration of the Epiphany on January 6th. The city undergoes a captivating transformation during Christmas, with vibrant decorations adorning the streets and illuminating shops and homes.

On December the 3rd the municipality festive program commences with the official lighting ceremony at Kennedy Square, followed by a concert featuring talented performers. Christmas Traditions & New Year Celebrations

In the weeks leading up to Christmas many Cypriots fast for 40 days, and then they have a big feast on Christmas day. Enjoy dishes like stuffed turkey, chicken, roast lamb, and pork. Save room for delicious desserts like kourabiedes (almond cakes with icing) and Melomakarona (honey biscuits with walnuts).

As the New Year approaches Communities come together to bid farewell to the old year and usher in the new one with hope and joy. A key highlight of this celebration is the cutting of the Vassilopita, a special New Year’s cake named after St. Basil. This sweet treat holds a hidden coin, adding an element of surprise to the festivities. The person discovering the coin is believed to receive good luck for the upcoming year, fostering unity and joy among family and friends.
